June in the Desert Garden
June is the hottest, driest stretch before the monsoon — a survival month where smart watering, shade, and storm prep matter far more than planting.
What To Do in June
Grass
- Water Bermuda deeply in the early morning, and raise the mower height slightly so longer blades shade the soil.
- Don’t scalp the lawn in extreme heat — stressed grass browns fast.
Trees & Shrubs
- Avoid planting now; wait for the monsoon or fall.
- Finish palm trimming and remove any dead or loose branches before monsoon storms arrive.
- Deep-water trees every 7 to 14 days to push roots down; shallow watering invites shallow, storm-vulnerable roots.
Flowers
- Only the toughest heat-lovers will hold — vinca, portulaca, and lantana.
- Water containers daily; they dry out fast in the heat.
Vegetables
- Harvest early in the morning.
- Keep okra, melons, black-eyed peas, and sweet potatoes watered — they’ll cruise through the heat.
- Let spent spring beds rest under mulch, or solarize them to kill weeds and pests.
Don’t Make These Garden Mistakes in June
- Don’t water midday — you’ll lose most of it to evaporation and can scald roots.
- Don’t skip pre-monsoon tree work; weak, overgrown, or dead limbs are what fail in the first big storm.
- Don’t fertilize heat-stressed plants; feeding pushes tender growth that burns.
- Don’t let mulch thin out — bare soil bakes and moisture vanishes.
- Don’t ignore wilting citrus and young trees; they may need a deep soak between regular waterings.
